In a powerful call to action, Grace Ike, Chairperson of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has declared that press freedom is not a privilege but a vital cornerstone of democracy.

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja ahead of a record-breaking 72-hour interview marathon, Ike stressed that the freedom of the press must be non-negotiable in any society committed to justice, accountability, and equality.

The marathon, set to take place from April 17 to April 20, 2025, at Harrow Park Golf Club in Abuja, is being organised by NUJ FCT as part of activities to mark the 2025 World Press Freedom Day. Abuja-based journalist Livinus Victor will anchor the historic event, aimed at breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest interview session.

Ike described the initiative as bold and innovative, noting that it reflects journalism’s enduring power to inform, educate, and inspire societal progress.

“Today, journalists face challenges ranging from censorship, harassment, and intimidation to outright threats to their lives,” Ike said. “These challenges not only undermine our ability to report the truth but also weaken the democratic structures that hold governments accountable.”

She added that the marathon would spotlight these issues while advocating for stronger protections for journalists across the globe.

“The event will feature meaningful conversations with thought leaders, policy influencers, and the general public,” she noted. “Topics to be covered include governance, human rights, climate change, and education—issues that cut across borders and reflect the shared humanity of Nigerians.”

Encouraging widespread support for the initiative, Ike urged all Nigerians—particularly journalists within the FCT—to actively participate in what she described as a historic moment for the media.

“As the first female Chairperson of NUJ FCT, I am particularly inspired by the promise of this event,” she said. “It is an opportunity to break barriers, redefine narratives, and leave a legacy for future generations of journalists.”

She also pledged that under her leadership, NUJ FCT would continue to prioritise capacity development for journalists, equipping them with relevant skills and tools in the digital age.

In his remarks, Livinus Victor, the lead interviewer for the marathon, said the event would not only aim to set a world record but also draw global attention to the importance of press freedom and the crucial role of journalism in upholding democratic values.

“In spite of increasing threats to press freedom across the world including censorship, harassment and violence, journalists continue to carry out their mission with courage and integrity,” Victor stated.

He emphasized that in an era dominated by misinformation and declining public trust in institutions, professional journalism serves as a vital line of defense against disinformation and manipulation.

“In an age where truth is often under siege, this initiative seeks to draw attention to the essential need for a free, ethical, and fearless press,” he said. “Democracy is impossible without an informed public, and journalists are the ones who make that possible.”

Tagged “Nigeria, Our Strength,” the marathon will include public engagement sessions and activities designed to celebrate press freedom and honour the sacrifices made by journalists worldwide.
