NUPRC, NNRA Partner to Strengthen Radiological Safety in Oil, Gas Operations
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has entered into a partnership with the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) aimed at strengthening the enforcement of radiological safety standards in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry while reducing the overall cost of operations.
The collaboration is expected to enhance regulatory coordination between both agencies and ensure the safe use, transportation, storage and disposal of radioactive materials deployed in upstream petroleum activities.
Under the arrangement, the NUPRC will work closely with the NNRA to improve compliance with safety regulations governing the use of radiation technologies in oil and gas exploration and production operations.
The NUPRC is responsible for regulating the technical, commercial and operational aspects of upstream petroleum activities in Nigeria, including exploration, development and production of oil and gas resources.
On its part, the NNRA oversees the possession, use, transportation, storage and disposal of radioactive sources, while promoting the beneficial application of radiation technologies across various sectors of the economy.
Officials say the partnership will help streamline regulatory processes, strengthen oversight mechanisms and ensure that operators adhere to internationally accepted safety standards in the handling of radioactive materials used in drilling, well logging and other petroleum operations.
The collaboration is also expected to reduce duplication of regulatory functions, improve operational efficiency and lower compliance costs for industry operators without compromising safety and environmental protection.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, noting that effective regulation of radiological materials is critical to protecting workers, host communities and the environment from potential hazards associated with oil and gas operations.
