NUPRC Threatens to Revoke Flare Gas Awards Over Non-Utilisation
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has warned that beneficiaries of flare gas sites risk losing their permits if they fail to utilise the sites within the stipulated period.
The Commission Chief Executive (CCE), Mrs Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, gave the warning on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, during a working visit to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, in Abuja.
During the meeting, Eyesan presented an update on the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme (NGFCP), highlighting the Commission’s monitoring of awarded flare gas sites and the progress being made by beneficiaries.
She said the Commission conducts an assessment one year after an award is granted to determine whether the beneficiary has made considerable progress towards utilising the flare gas resource.
“One year after an award has been granted, the Commission conducts an evaluation to determine whether there has been considerable progress,” Eyesan said.
She added that beneficiaries who fail to demonstrate sufficient progress would face regulatory action.
“Where there is insufficient progress, the Commission will take appropriate regulatory action, including revocation of the award where necessary,” she said.
The NUPRC maintained that the monitoring exercise is aimed at ensuring that flare gas awards translate into actual utilisation, while supporting Nigeria’s efforts to reduce gas flaring and unlock the economic value of associated gas resources.
