Obasanjo made the call while speaking on the state of democracy and leadership across the continent, stressing that leadership must be anchored on service, accountability and the collective good rather than individual ambition.

He urged political leaders to develop and adopt a democratic prototype tailored to Africa’s realities—one capable of ensuring transparency, strengthening institutions and promoting inclusive development.

According to the former president, democracy should not merely be about periodic elections, but about creating structures that guarantee security, economic opportunity, justice and social welfare for the people.

He emphasized that good governance in all ramifications—political, economic and social—remains the cornerstone of sustainable development and stability across African nations.

Obasanjo concluded by encouraging leaders to prioritise the needs of citizens and work collaboratively toward a future defined by responsible leadership and shared prosperity.
