In a dramatic turn of events, the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, faced impeachment during the Tuesday plenary session, with 18 out of the 26 assembly members casting their votes against him.
Following his removal, Oludaisi Elemide emerged as the newly elected speaker, taking charge of the assembly’s leadership.
The decision to impeach Oluomo was reportedly fueled by allegations surrounding the embezzlement of funds, adding another layer of controversy to his tenure.

This development comes on the heels of Oluomo’s arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in September 2022.
The EFCC detained Oluomo over suspicions of financial mismanagement, with the arrest taking place at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
The former speaker was subsequently arraigned at the federal high court in Lagos on charges of money laundering amounting to a staggering N2.475 billion.
These recent events underscore the challenges and legal troubles that have beset Oluomo’s leadership, leaving the Ogun State House of Assembly with a new speaker at its helm, tasked with navigating the aftermath of this significant political upheaval.
