Oluremi Tinubu Crowned ‘Queen of War’ in Gombe, Launches Menstrual Hygiene Campaign

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has been conferred with the traditional title of “Queen of War” by the Emir of Akko, Alhaji Umar Muhammad Atiku, in recognition of her dedication to the welfare of women and children across the country.

The colourful ceremony, held at the Akko Emirate in Gombe State on Thursday, was attended by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the Majority Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Usman Bello Kumo, and other dignitaries.

The title, considered one of the most prestigious honours in the emirate, is historically reserved for personalities who embody strength, compassion, and the protection of society’s vulnerable.

In her acceptance speech, Mrs. Tinubu expressed gratitude for the recognition, describing it as both an honour and a call to greater responsibility.

“This is more than a title; it is an inspiration to do more for women, children, and the vulnerable. I see this nomination as a duty to intensify our work in education, healthcare, and empowerment, especially in rural communities,” she said.

The First Lady also urged traditional leaders across Nigeria to collaborate with her initiatives, stressing that cultural institutions are crucial to reaching the grassroots and achieving lasting impact.

Beyond the traditional honour, Senator Tinubu’s two-day visit to Gombe was marked by the launch of the “Renewed Hope Initiative: Flow With Confidence,” a program focused on menstrual hygiene management for adolescent girls.

The initiative aims to reduce absenteeism during menstruation, a persistent challenge to girl-child education, by distributing sanitary pads to schoolgirls.

“No girl should stay away from school simply because of her period,” Mrs Tinubu declared at the programme’s unveiling.

“Through this initiative, we are working to ensure dignity, confidence, and access to education for every Nigerian girl.”

Stakeholders present at the launch commended the initiative, noting that it would not only improve hygiene but also tackle stigma and promote equality in classrooms.

With the dual milestone of a cultural honour and a new nationwide programme, Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s visit to Gombe highlighted her unique approach of combining tradition with progressive policy cementing her role as both a custodian of cultural values and a driving force for social development.
