President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on religious leaders to play a stronger role in combating terrorism, kidnapping, banditry and violent extremism in Nigeria and across the African continent.

The President made the call during the Kano Grand Maulud of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tijani, where he was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.

President Tinubu urged religious leaders to consistently use their influence to speak against violence and extremism while promoting peace, tolerance and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.

He also stressed the importance of strengthening peace education and providing young people with sound moral guidance to prevent them from being influenced by extremist ideologies.

The President described the Tijjaniyya community as an important partner in efforts to counter violent extremism and promote stability across the Sahel and West Africa.

He noted that religious institutions and scholars have a significant role to play in shaping the values and attitudes of young people, particularly in communities affected by insecurity.

President Tinubu also paid tribute to the late Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, acknowledging his contributions to Islamic scholarship and religious leadership.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening regional security, promoting dialogue and fostering peaceful coexistence among communities.

The Grand Maulud attracted prominent Islamic scholars, religious leaders and dignitaries from Nigeria and other countries, including Algeria, Morocco, Senegal and Egypt.

The gathering provided an opportunity for religious and community leaders to renew calls for peace, unity and cooperation in confronting the security and humanitarian challenges facing Nigeria and the wider Sahel region.
