The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a 38-year-old man, Jacob Irewa, for allegedly setting his wife, Berida Irawo, on fire following a domestic dispute in Lokoja, the state capital.

The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Salisu Afusat, the B Division Surveillance Team received a distress call at about 8:30 p.m. and immediately mobilised to the scene, where the suspect was arrested.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the dispute reportedly began after the victim allegedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes which she believed he no longer needed, without his consent.

The Police said the disagreement escalated when Irewa allegedly threatened his wife, obtained petrol from his motorcycle and set her ablaze.

The victim survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele, Lokoja.

The Police further disclosed that the suspect allegedly admitted to the act in his statement to investigators.

The Kogi State Police Command said a comprehensive investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, after which the suspect is expected to face prosecution for alleged attempted culpable homicide.

The Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged members of the public to seek peaceful and lawful means of resolving domestic disputes rather than resorting to violence.
