Police Warn Against Destruction of Campaign Posters Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Nigeria Police Force has warned political supporters and other individuals against tearing, defacing or destroying campaign posters, banners and billboards belonging to candidates and political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Force expressed concern over growing incidents of deliberate destruction of campaign materials across the country, describing the acts as signs of political intolerance.

It warned political thugs, hoodlums and other individuals involved to desist, stressing that political differences or loyalty to a particular party do not give anyone the right to destroy another candidate’s property or prevent them from campaigning freely.

According to the Police, the unlawful destruction or removal of campaign materials may amount to malicious damage, which is a criminal offence under applicable laws, including Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law.

The Force also reiterated that all political parties and candidates, regardless of their affiliation or status, are entitled to equal protection under the law.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take proactive steps to prevent such incidents, investigate reported cases and ensure that anyone found culpable is arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The IGP further warned that political sponsors and individuals who recruit, encourage or facilitate the destruction of campaign materials would also be held accountable where evidence establishes their involvement.

The Police called on political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully and respect the rights of others, warning that political intolerance, intimidation and criminal conduct must not be allowed to undermine the democratic process.

The Force reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order throughout the electioneering period, stressing that anyone found violating the law would face the consequences of their actions.
