Professor Iya Abubakar’s life story remains one of Nigeria’s greatest examples of academic excellence, intellectual courage, and pioneering leadership. His journey from Adamawa State to becoming one of Nigeria’s most respected mathematicians and university administrators reflects decades of dedication to education, research, and national development.
Born on December 16, 1934, in Adamawa Province (present-day Adamawa State), Nigeria, Professor Iya Abubakar developed a passion for learning from an early age. His academic ability became evident during his formative years, eventually leading him to pursue higher education at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions.
In 1957, he graduated with a First Class Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Ibadan, one of the leading universities in Africa at the time. His exceptional performance placed him among Nigeria’s brightest young scholars and opened the path for further academic advancement.
Determined to deepen his knowledge of mathematics, he proceeded to the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, where he earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mathematics in 1962 at the age of 28. His achievement made history as he became the first Northern Nigerian to obtain a doctorate degree in any academic discipline, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s educational development.
Professor Abubakar returned to Nigeria with a vision to contribute to the growth of higher education and scientific research. In 1966, at the age of 33, he became Nigeria’s first indigenous Professor of Mathematics at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, breaking another academic barrier and inspiring generations of Nigerian scholars.
His leadership journey at ABU continued to rise. By 1971, he became the Head of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, where he played a major role in strengthening mathematical education and research at the university.
In 1975, at the age of 40, Professor Iya Abubakar was appointed the second indigenous Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, becoming one of the youngest university leaders in Nigeria’s history. During his tenure, he contributed to the expansion and development of the institution, strengthening academic programmes and promoting excellence in teaching and research.
Beyond academia, Professor Abubakar also served Nigeria in several important national capacities. He was appointed Minister of Defence in 1993, where he brought his intellectual discipline and administrative experience into public service.
Throughout his career, he remained committed to mathematics, education, and national development. His contributions helped lay foundations for scientific advancement in Nigeria, particularly in the areas of mathematics, computer science, and university administration.
