Remembering Prof. Umaru Shehu: The Medical Scholar Who Shaped Public Health and Medical Education in Nigeria
The story of Emeritus Professor Umaru Shehu is one of exceptional scholarship, visionary leadership and unwavering service to humanity. Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s foremost medical scholars and public health experts, his remarkable career spanned more than six decades, during which he transformed medical education, strengthened public health systems and mentored generations of healthcare professionals.
Born in 1930 in Maiduguri, Borno State, Prof. Shehu rose from humble beginnings to become one of Africa’s most respected physicians and academics. His groundbreaking achievements earned him the distinction of becoming Northern Nigeria’s first Professor Emeritus of Medicine, a recognition reserved for scholars whose contributions have left an enduring impact on their disciplines.
His educational journey began at University College, Ibadan—then affiliated with the University of London—where he studied medicine before proceeding to the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, for advanced medical and public health training. Throughout his academic career, he earned several professional qualifications with distinction, laying the foundation for a lifetime devoted to healthcare, research and teaching.
Prof. Shehu became internationally recognised for his expertise in community medicine, preventive healthcare, epidemiology and public health policy. His work consistently emphasised disease prevention, maternal and child health, primary healthcare delivery and strengthening health systems to improve the quality of life of ordinary citizens.
As an educator, he inspired thousands of medical students and young doctors, many of whom later became leading consultants, researchers, professors and health administrators across Nigeria and beyond.
His leadership extended beyond the classroom.
Prof. Shehu served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where he championed academic excellence and institutional development. He also served as Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, University of Maiduguri, helping to strengthen medical training in Nigeria’s North-East.
Earlier in his career, he held the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, contributing significantly to the growth of one of Africa’s largest universities.
His expertise was equally sought after internationally.
He served as the World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in both Nigeria and Ethiopia, where he worked closely with governments and international partners on disease control, healthcare planning and public health reforms.
Beyond executive appointments, Prof. Shehu chaired several influential governing councils, including those of Bayero University, Kano, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, where he played pivotal roles in shaping higher education and healthcare administration.
Throughout his distinguished career, he received numerous honours and recognitions for his outstanding service to Nigeria.
The Federal Government conferred on him two of the country’s highest national honours—the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) and later the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR)—in recognition of his immense contributions to medicine, education and national development.
He was also a Foundation Fellow of several leading medical and scientific institutions, including the Nigerian Academy of Medicine, the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, the West African College of Physicians, and other professional bodies that continue to benefit from his vision and mentorship.
Beyond his impressive titles and accomplishments, colleagues and students remember Prof. Shehu as a humble intellectual, disciplined administrator and compassionate physician whose commitment to excellence never wavered.
On 2 October 2023, Nigeria lost one of its finest minds when Prof. Umaru Shehu passed away at the age of 92.
Although he is no longer with us, his influence continues to resonate through the countless doctors he trained, the institutions he helped build, the health policies he shaped and the generations of scholars inspired by his life’s work.
His legacy remains a powerful reminder that true greatness lies not only in academic achievement but also in selfless service, leadership and the lasting impact one leaves on society.
