Reps Approve Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills, Paving Way for New Revenue Framework
The House of Representatives has approved four tax reform Bills earlier transmitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking a major step in overhauling Nigeria’s tax administration.
The lawmakers considered and adopted the report of its special committee on the proposals during plenary on Thursday, March 13, 2025.
The approved Bills include:
– A Bill for an Act to provide for the assessment, collection, and accounting of revenue accruing to the Federation, states, and local governments, while prescribing the powers and functions of tax authorities.
– A Bill for an Act to repeal the Federal Inland Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, No. 13, 2007, and enact the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, which will establish the Nigeria Revenue Service, charged with the assessment, collection, and accounting of federal revenue.
– A Bill for an Act to establish the Joint Revenue Board, the Tax Appeal Tribunal, and the Office of the Tax Ombud, aimed at harmonizing, coordinating, and settling disputes arising from revenue administration.
– A Bill for an Act to repeal certain taxation laws, consolidate Nigeria’s tax legal framework, and enact the Nigeria Tax Act to regulate taxation on income, transactions, and instruments.
With the House’s approval, the Bills now move forward in the legislative process, signaling a potential transformation in Nigeria’s tax system.
