Sanwo-Olu Commissions Lagos Fresh Food Hub in Agege, Strengthens Food Distribution Network
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commissioned the Lagos Fresh Food Hub in Pen Cinema, Agege, describing the facility as a major step towards improving food distribution, strengthening food security and making fresh produce more accessible to residents across the state.
The modern facility, built on 7,000 square metres, is designed to create a more organised and efficient link between farmers, suppliers, traders, retailers, institutional buyers and consumers.
Speaking at the commissioning, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the hub would make it easier to move food from producers and suppliers to communities across Lagos while reducing some of the challenges associated with the state’s food distribution system.
The facility provides accommodation for hundreds of traders, as well as dry and cold storage facilities designed to improve food preservation and reduce losses along the supply chain.
It also features a dedicated seafood section, parking facilities and electric vehicle (EV) charging points, reflecting the state’s broader effort to modernise food markets and distribution infrastructure.
According to the Governor, the significance of the project goes beyond the physical infrastructure, as it is intended to bring key players across the food value chain together within a coordinated distribution system.
“More importantly, it brings farmers, traders, retailers, institutional buyers and consumers together in a more organised food distribution system,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He explained that the Agege facility forms part of Lagos State’s wider network of food distribution hubs aimed at bringing food closer to residents and improving the efficiency of the supply chain.
The Agege Fresh Food Hub serves as one of the middle-level hubs in the network, receiving supplies from the Central Food Security and Logistics Hub at Ketu-Ereyun.
The Governor said the facility would work alongside other hubs, including the one in Mushin, to create a stronger and more interconnected food distribution network across Lagos.
The initiative is expected to support traders and food businesses, improve storage and handling capacity, strengthen connections between producers and markets, and contribute to greater food security for Lagos residents.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in infrastructure and systems that will strengthen the state’s food supply chain and ensure that Lagos residents have more reliable access to fresh and affordable food.
He said the development of modern food hubs across strategic locations would help position Lagos for a more resilient, efficient and sustainable food distribution system.
