Senate Advances Barau’s Agricultural Revolution Bill, Passes Two Bills for Third Reading

The Senate has taken a step towards improving agricultural production and food security in Nigeria as the Agricultural Revolution Bill, 2026, sponsored by Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, scaled first reading during Tuesday’s plenary.

Senator Barau disclosed this after the plenary, expressing optimism that the bill, when passed into law, would create more opportunities to boost agricultural production and improve food security in the country.

He said the proposed legislation was in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

At the same plenary, the Senate passed two bills for third reading: the Raw Materials Research and Development Council Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply Management of Nigeria (Establishment) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

The two bills had earlier been passed but were rescinded through motions and recommitted to the plenary for further legislative scrutiny to address identified issues and ensure legal clarity, consistency and proper drafting.

The Senate also passed the Bill for an Act to Amend the National Secondary Education Commission Act, 2026, for second reading.

The bill seeks to strengthen the administration and coordination of public senior secondary education in the country. It was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Education (Basic and Secondary) for further legislative action.

In another development, the Senate confirmed the appointment of Engr. Sani Mohammed Ndanusa as a non-career Ambassador/High Commissioner of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The confirmation followed a request by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which screened the nominee.

Meanwhile, the Senate adjourned plenary until Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
