Senate calls for sacking of MDA heads

By Matthew Atungwu

The Senate has demanded that President Bola Tinubu fire any minister, department, or agency head who does not show up in person for ongoing interactive meetings on the Fiscal Strategy Paper and the 2024–2026 Medium Term Expenditure Framework.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, made this demand while reading his opening remarks at the official opening of the interactive session that the senate committees on finance, appropriations, national planning, and local and foreign debts jointly arranged.

While borrowing for Nigeria could not be completely avoided, the Senate President also pointed out that the current pattern could not continue.

He explained that the purpose of the MTEF/FSP interactive session was to develop methods for increasing government revenue production.

According to Akpabio, Nigeria is under extreme financial and socioeconomic strain as a result of global events, which is why the 2024–2026 MTEF/FSP is being discussed now.

However, in order to give the invited agencies additional time to submit the necessary documentation to the committee, the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Sani Musa (APC Niger East), deferred the interactive session to Monday next week.
