In a solemn gathering, the Senate Joint Committee on Defence, Army, Navy, and Airforce held a confidential meeting with Nigeria’s Service Chiefs to deliberate on the recent tragic incident in Okuoma community, Delta State, where 16 soldiers were killed.
The session, led by Senator Ahmad Lawan, commenced at 3:42 pm with key military figures including General Christopher Gwabin Musa, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, Air Marshal Hassan, and Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla in attendance.
The Senate had previously directed the joint committee to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, which saw the loss of a Commanding officer, two Majors, a Captain, and 12 Soldiers. The federal government has been urged to identify and prosecute those responsible for this crime, described by Senator Lawan as “barbaric.”
Emphasising the paramount importance of security, Senator Lawan called upon the nation to support the Armed Forces by providing information that could prevent future incidents and aid in bringing the perpetrators to justice. The National Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the military and stressed that securing the nation is of utmost priority over any other sectoral investment.
