The Nigerian Senate has confirmed seven ministerial nominees sent by President Bola Tinubu, following a thorough screening session during Wednesday’s plenary.
Among the confirmed appointees are Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Muhammadu Dingyadi for Labour and Employment, and Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
Others include Dr. Jumoke Oduwole as Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Idi Maiha for Livestock Development, Yusuf Ata as Minister of State for Housing, and Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad as Minister of State for Education.
Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, nominee from Anambra and widow of the former Eastern Nigeria leader Odumegwu Ojukwu, highlighted the deteriorating state of Nigeria’s foreign embassies, which she described as being in “deplorable conditions” due to underfunding.
“It is imperative to renovate the buildings,” she urged, emphasising the need for embassies to reflect Nigeria’s standing globally. She added that commitment to service was key to achieving peace in the country.
The screening session saw bipartisan praise, with several senators commending Tinubu for nominating individuals beyond party lines.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA-Abia) lauded the nomination of Odumegwu-Ojukwu, noting that the administration’s approach underscored a commitment to unity.
“The President must be commended for nominating someone across party lines,” Abaribe remarked, calling the move a “step towards national integration.”
Senator Victor Umeh (LP-Anambra) echoed the sentiment, describing her nomination as a healing process for the nation.
