Shettima made the call on Monday in Abuja during the public presentation of the book “My Life and Journalists Hangout” and the 60th birthday celebration of veteran journalist Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, Director of News at TVC News.

Speaking at the event, the Vice President urged media professionals to act as partners in national development by using their platforms to promote informed discourse and accountability.

“A society is destroyed not by the absence of ideas, but by the absence of men and women with the courage to interrogate ideas, test them against reason, and ask the difficult questions that save a people from the seduction of easy answers,” Shettima said.

He praised Kolade-Otitoju’s contributions to journalism, noting that his widely followed programme, Journalists Hangout, has helped nurture a culture of critical engagement and public discourse in Nigeria.

The event attracted prominent figures from government, media, and other sectors, highlighting the enduring role of journalism in shaping democratic values and national conversations.
