Sowore Arrives in US to Warm Welcome and Honoured by American City

In a heartening reunion after five years, Omoyele Sowore, the #RevolutionNow convener, arrived in the United States on Saturday to a warm welcome from family and friends. This marked the end of a prolonged legal battle in Nigeria, with the Federal High Court ordering the release of his passport after the Nigerian government withdrew its treasonable felony case against him.
Sowore’s departure from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on a United Airlines flight to Washington, D.C., was met with support from his followers. Despite confrontations with Air Force and immigration officers in Lagos, Sowore successfully landed in Washington, D.C., and continued to Newark International Airport.

Upon arrival at Newark at approximately 10 AM U.S. Eastern Time, Sowore was joyously greeted by family, friends, and supporters. Among them were Kayode Ojo, a member of the TakeItBack Movement, and various well-wishers, including Pius Omoregha, Adebayo Niyi, Seun Akinfolarin, Friday Valentine Offo, Odinma Anaedo Social Club USA, and Engineer Victor.
Expressing gratitude for the warm reception, Sowore conveyed his commitment to a brief stay, “This is only going to be a brief stay as I shall return to Nigeria for ongoing activism despite the legal challenges.”
In a significant turn of events, Sowore attended a reception organised by the City of Haworth. Hosted by Mayor Heather Wasser, the event featured U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer, credited by Sowore for facilitating his return to the U.S. The Mayor presented a proclamation honouring Sowore and his family for their resilience and dedication to Nigeria’s emancipation.
At the reception, Sowore delivered a heartfelt speech, acknowledging the support he received. His wife, Opeyemi, expressed gratitude to the women who led the campaign for Sowore’s release in Haworth, emphasising the bonds formed during challenging times.
Sowore’s daughter contributed to the emotional atmosphere, reading a poem that described her father as “a man with a big heart.” Council member Alanna Zahn Davis highlighted the unity Sowore’s incarceration brought to the Haworth community.
The return to the U.S. marks a new chapter for Sowore, symbolising the triumph of perseverance and the enduring spirit of those dedicated to positive change. The Nigerian activist remains steadfast in his commitment to advocate for justice and the betterment of his homeland.
