TCN clears air on recent emergency procurement

By Matthew Atungwu

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has clarified that its recent emergency procurement was part of efforts to cushion the effects of insurgency and vandalism and the effects caused to transmission towers.

TCN made this announcement at a press conference over the weekend in Abuja, operating under the direction of the Civil Society Organisations Budget Implementation, Assessment, Evaluation, and Monitoring Committee.

The explanation was made in response to a report that claimed certain contracts were awarded outside of the procurement norms and were classified as emergencies.

Speaking to reporters, Oyofo Sule, a consultant for TCN, lamented the insurgent attacks on power transmission facilities, saying that they continue to be a serious problem that impedes efforts to stabilize Nigeria’s energy network and causes sporadic blackouts.

Emphasizing adherence to Section 42 of the Public Procurement Act 2007, TCN reaffirmed its dedication to openness, responsibility, and the continuous provision of residents’ basic services.

According to him, the TCN thinks that by making emergency purchases, the electricity grid will be more resilient and interruptions from such events will be minimized.
