Thailand Donates 12 Metric Tonnes of Rice to Support Food-Insecure Communities in Nigeria
The Government of Thailand has donated 12 metric tonnes of rice valued at $22,000 to support communities affected by food insecurity in Nigeria amid growing concerns over worsening hunger conditions in parts of the country.
The donation was announced on Thursday in Abuja by Thailand’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Thirapath Mongkolnavin, during the presentation of the rice to the World Food Programme (WFP) for distribution to vulnerable populations.
According to the ambassador, the donation reflects Thailand’s commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts and assisting communities facing food shortages, particularly those affected by conflict, displacement and economic challenges.
The rice will be distributed by the World Food Programme to vulnerable households, with a focus on communities in North-East Nigeria where humanitarian agencies have continued to raise concerns about food insecurity and malnutrition.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Ambassador Mongkolnavin expressed hope that the contribution would provide relief to affected families and further strengthen the longstanding relationship between Thailand and Nigeria.
The World Food Programme welcomed the donation, describing it as a timely intervention that would support ongoing efforts to address the needs of vulnerable populations across affected areas.
Humanitarian organisations have repeatedly warned that millions of Nigerians remain at risk of hunger due to insecurity, displacement, climate-related challenges and economic pressures affecting food production and access to basic necessities.
Thailand is one of the world’s leading rice-producing nations and is ranked as the sixth-largest producer globally, with annual production estimated at approximately 34.3 million metric tonnes.
The donation underscores continued international support for humanitarian initiatives aimed at alleviating food insecurity and improving the welfare of vulnerable communities in Nigeria.
