The Mathematics of Life: Christ is the Answer

Jerry Adesewo

Mathematicians often say that life is like a line segment, drawn from point B to point D. That is, from BIRTH (B) to DEATH (D). Indeed, every one of us begins at birth and will someday face death. Whether we are rich or poor, educated or uneducated, powerful or powerless, this line segment defines the certainty of our human journey.

But what many fail to realize is that in between B and D, there is a mysterious C. And C stands for CHRIST.

When Christ is placed at the centre of life’s equation, our story does not end at D (Death). Instead, it stretches into E – ETERNAL LIFE. Without Christ, however, the story of life after death is not E but F – FIRE.

This is the mathematics of life.

Life Without Christ: (B – C) + D = F

If a person is born (B), but chooses to live without Christ (– C), then the equation of his life becomes:

BIRTH – CHRIST + DEATH = FIRE.

The fire here is not ordinary fire; it refers to the eternal judgment described in Revelation 20:14–15: “Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.”

This means that a life that leaves Christ out of its centre is incomplete, dangerous, and headed for destruction. No matter how rich, famous, or accomplished a person may become, the absence of Christ leaves only one end: eternal separation from God.

Life With Christ: B + C + D = E

On the other hand, when a person is born (B), embraces Christ (+ C), and eventually dies (+ D), then the equation of his life is:

BIRTH + CHRIST + DEATH = ETERNAL LIFE.

This is what Jesus declared in John 11:25–26: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.”

The truth of the Gospel is simple but profound: Christ transforms death from an end into a doorway. Through Him, death loses its sting, and life extends into eternity with God.

Why Christ Must Be at the Centre

Why must Christ be the middle of our lives—the bridge between BIRTH and DEATH?

1. Because He is the only way to God.

Acts 4:12 declares: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Without Him, man is helpless before the reality of sin and death.

2. Because He is the giver of eternal life.

1 John 5:11–12 says: “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

3. Because He gives life meaning even before death.

A life with Christ is not only about heaven after death, but also about peace, joy, and purpose here on earth. Jesus Himself said in John 10:10: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Choosing Between E and F

The beauty—and the danger—of the mathematics of life is that it leaves each of us with a choice. Every person will either:

  • Put Christ in the middle and gain Eternal Life (E),
  • Or remove Christ from the equation and end in Fire (F).

It is the most serious choice any human being will ever make. Wealth, education, or position cannot alter the equation. The only factor that makes the difference is C – CHRIST.

A Call to Evangelism

Proverbs 11:30 says: “He that wins souls is wise.” This truth challenges us who already have Christ to share Him with others. Imagine a mathematician who knows the solution to a problem but refuses to tell the students struggling before him. That is how it is when Christians keep the truth of salvation to themselves.

Every soul without Christ is running the equation of life towards F – Fire. And unless someone tells them of Christ, their story will end in eternal tragedy. Paul wrote in Romans 10:13–14: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?”

Where Are You in the Equation?

Dear reader, where are you in the mathematics of life?

Are you still at B, living life without concern for where the line leads?

Have you embraced C—Christ, allowing Him to redefine your journey?

Or are you moving blindly toward D, thinking death is the end, only to discover it leads to F—Fire?

Christ is the only One who can make the difference. With Him, the journey does not stop at death; it continues into eternal life. Without Him, the journey ends in everlasting separation from God.m

The call today is simple: put Christ at the centre of your life. Let Him bridge the gap between your birth and your death. Accept Him as Lord and Saviour, and the equation of your life will no longer be B – C + D = F, but B + C + D = E.

This is the mathematics of life. And this is the wisdom of the Gospel.
