Three Maritime Incidents Involving Indian-Crewed Vessels Raise Security Concerns Near Strait of Hormuz
Three separate maritime security incidents involving Indian-crewed vessels have heightened concerns over safety in the Gulf region following military actions linked to the ongoing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest incident occurred on June 11 when U.S. forces struck the oil tanker MT Jalveer in the Gulf of Oman as part of operations enforcing a blockade on Iranian oil shipments. According to U.S. Central Command, the vessel was disabled after allegedly attempting to transport Iranian oil in violation of the blockade. All 20 Indian crew members on board were safely rescued and no casualties were reported.
The development came just days after a more deadly incident involving the tanker MT Settebello. On June 9, U.S. forces targeted the vessel near the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in the deaths of three Indian sailors. Indian authorities confirmed that the victims included the ship’s chief engineer and two other crew members. Twenty-one other crew members were rescued.
Indian officials lodged a strong diplomatic protest following the fatalities, expressing concern over the impact of military operations on civilian maritime personnel operating in the region.
The incidents involving MT Jalveer and MT Settebello are part of a series of actions connected to the U.S.-led blockade targeting Iranian-linked shipping routes. U.S. authorities have stated that several vessels have been disabled or redirected since the enforcement measures began earlier this year.
Maritime security experts note that the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical shipping corridors, handling a significant share of global oil and energy trade. Any disruption in the area has the potential to affect international shipping, energy markets and regional stability.
With three incidents involving Indian-crewed vessels reported within four days, concerns are growing over the safety of commercial shipping and seafarers operating in the Gulf of Oman and surrounding waters. Indian authorities have said they are closely monitoring developments and coordinating with relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety of their maritime personnel.
