President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the extension will take effect after Adeniyi’s current tenure expires on August 1, 2026, and will run until February 2027.

The statement explained that the extension is intended to enable the Customs boss consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window initiative and ensure a smooth and orderly succession process within the service.

During the transition period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the NCS Board to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and facilitate the retirement of officers who have either attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years of service.

Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and has risen steadily through the ranks during his career.

He became a Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020 and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.

President Tinubu appointed him Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023.

The Presidency said the extension will provide the leadership continuity required to advance ongoing reforms and strengthen institutional development within the Customs Service.
