President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has launched a $2.42 billion development portfolio aimed at strengthening social protection, supporting vulnerable Nigerians, improving infrastructure and transforming key sectors of the economy.

The portfolio was unveiled during an event at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja, according to the Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr Doris Anite-Uzoka.

The initiative comprises the Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Strengthening (NG-CARES), the Sustainable Urban and Rural Development for Livelihoods and Infrastructure Development (SOLID) programme, and the HOPE Portfolio.

Under the $500 million NG-CARES programme, about 22.7 million vulnerable Nigerians are expected to benefit from food security interventions, livelihood support and social transfers.

The $300 million SOLID programme is targeted at developing climate-resilient infrastructure and supporting approximately 3.5 million internally displaced persons and members of host communities.

The HOPE Portfolio, valued at $1.622 billion, will focus on strengthening primary healthcare through HOPE-PHC, improving basic education through HOPE-EDU and enhancing public sector efficiency through HOPE-GOV.

The Minister described the launch as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s development efforts, noting that the programmes are designed to directly impact communities and improve the lives of millions of Nigerians.

Dr Anite-Uzoka expressed appreciation to the World Bank and stakeholders across the Federal and State Governments for their contributions towards the development and implementation of the programmes.

She said the initiative represents a significant step towards strengthening social protection, improving human capital development and building more resilient communities across Nigeria.
