Tinubu: States to Cut Transport Fares Through CNG, Electric Vehicles From October 1
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that state governors have agreed to take immediate steps to reduce transportation costs across the country by expanding the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles.
The President disclosed this after meeting with members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum at the State House, Abuja, where he said a joint Federal and State committee would commence work immediately to drive down transportation costs.
According to Tinubu, the objective is for Nigerians to begin benefiting from lower transport fares from October 1, 2026, as cheaper and more efficient energy sources are increasingly adopted for public transportation.
“The governors have, on their own initiative, resolved to take immediate measures to bring down the cost of transportation in their states, with a strong focus on leveraging the cost benefits of CNG and electric vehicles. We have agreed that cheaper fuel should result in cheaper fares,” the President said.
Tinubu highlighted progress under the Presidential CNG Initiative, noting that more than 120,000 vehicles have been converted to CNG nationwide, while another 100,000 conversion kits are being processed.
He also directed the deployment of 500 additional CNG refuelling stations, which will bring the planned nationwide network to 1,000 stations.
The President said the lower operating cost of CNG-powered vehicles provides an opportunity to ease the financial burden of transportation on Nigerians.
“A vehicle running on CNG spends 60 to 80 per cent less on fuel than one running on petrol,” he said.
Tinubu stressed that intra-state transportation is where many Nigerians experience transport costs most directly and urged state governments to use the available opportunities to ensure that savings from cheaper fuel are passed on to commuters.
“From October 1, our goal is that Nigerians begin to partake in those savings through lower transport fares,” the President added.
The Federal Government said the initiative reflects its broader efforts to reduce the impact of transportation costs on households and businesses while accelerating Nigeria’s transition towards cleaner and more affordable energy for mobility.
