Tragedy in Lagos as face-off by Bus drivers’, union claims life of a pupil
The sit at home protest embarked upon by Bus transport owners in Mile 2- Seme-Badagry of Lagos state which had inflicted an untold hardship on commuters in the state has claimed the life of a Junior Secondary School (JSS) student.
According to an eyewitness, the JSS1 pupil and other students of Oko Afo Ilogbo Eremi School in Olorunda Local Council Development Area of the state had waited hours for bus after closing.
And that because of the strike, no bus was in sight, some of the students had to beg for lift from kind-hearted private car owners while others crowded themselves into a rickety Dyna truck carrying logs of bamboo.
The deceased student who couldn’t find space in the bus was said to have decided to hike on the tail board of the mini truck. According to a passer-by who identified himself as Koleosho disclosed that when the truck got to Iledu bus stop along Badagry expressway, it ran into a pot hole which made the little boy to lose balance and his feeble hand loosen from the iron bar he then fell off the van hitting his head on the tarmac.
The account said as the schoolboy battles for his life, some Good Samaritan rushed him to the school and that he died before he could get medical attention.
Pall of sadness engulfed the whole premises of the school as pupils and teachers discuss the bad news in low tones and no one was willing to talk to the press.
Findings revealed that the strike began 5 days ago, had worsen life for commuters mostly women, children and students who were left with no choice than walked long distances to and fro their destinations.
The development which had cause a clashed between Okada riders and bus owners in Oko Afo area of the state is said to be as result of the new ticket that was introduced by the State Government to replace the tickets issued by local governments in Motor Park within the state.
According to the Zonal chairman RTEAN Oko Afo, Alhaji Arigbabowo the ticket tagged Lagos State Development levy costs N800 contrary to speculation that the ticket costs N1000.
However, he called on the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene by withdrawing the offensive tickets for peace reign in the state.
