Tribute: Muhammadu Buhari – A Soldier, Statesman, and Servant of the Nation

By Matthew Eloyi

The passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s political and historical landscape. A man whose life embodied discipline, resilience, and service, Buhari leaves behind a legacy that will long be debated, studied, and remembered.

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Army to become Head of State in 1983 following a military coup. As a military ruler, he was known for his fierce anti-corruption drive and the introduction of the “War Against Indiscipline”—a policy that, though controversial, sought to instill order and civic responsibility in the populace.

After years in political retirement, Buhari returned to national attention with his democratic comeback. In 2015, he made history as the first opposition candidate to defeat a sitting Nigerian president, ushering in a new chapter in the nation’s democratic journey. His presidency, which lasted from 2015 to 2023, was marked by major efforts to fight corruption, build infrastructure, and tackle insecurity—though often with mixed results and heavy criticism.

Yet, beyond politics, Buhari was a symbol of simplicity and personal integrity. He was known for his austere lifestyle, his unwavering faith, and his consistent message of patriotism and national unity. For millions, he represented hope for a cleaner government. For others, he was a stern, unbending leader in a rapidly evolving democracy. But for all, Muhammadu Buhari was a pivotal figure in the story of Nigeria.

His final years were spent largely away from the spotlight, as he returned to private life in his hometown of Daura after handing over power. That retreat into quiet reflection after decades of service was perhaps his most powerful statement—that leadership is temporary, but legacy is eternal.

As Nigeria mourns, we remember not just the man who held power, but the one who dedicated his life, whether in uniform or in civilian clothes, to the country he loved.

May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus and grant comfort to his family, friends, and all Nigerians whose lives he touched.
