Trump Directs U.S. Congress to Probe Alleged Persecution of Christians in Nigeria — Rep. Moore
U.S. Congressman Riley M. Moore says President Donald Trump has instructed him and the Republican-led House Appropriations Committee to launch an in-depth investigation into what they allege is the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Moore said Trump’s directive follows increasing reports claiming that thousands of Christians across Nigeria are facing targeted attacks, discrimination, and pressure because of their faith.
Moore noted that the committee had already begun preliminary work on the matter, but Trump’s instruction would intensify efforts to establish the full extent of the alleged abuses.
He announced that the committee will convene a roundtable session featuring experts, human rights groups, and religious leaders to examine Nigeria’s security situation and allegations of religious persecution. The goal, he said, is to “build on the work we’ve done so far” by gathering detailed evidence and personal testimonies.
According to Moore, the United States has a moral responsibility to speak out. “We will never turn a blind eye to our brothers and sisters in Christ who suffer for their faith,” he wrote.
The Nigerian government has consistently denied accusations that Christians are being targeted because of their religion, maintaining that insecurity affects citizens of all faiths and ethnicities.
However, the move by the U.S. Congress—particularly one initiated at Trump’s request—signals renewed international attention on Nigeria’s human rights and security challenges.
