UNICEF condemns attack and abduction of Niger students

The Nigeria Representative of UNICEF Mr Peter Hawkins has condemned the attack and abduction of students in the Government Science College, Kagara by armed bandits in Niger State.

According to Mr Hawkins in a statement that was issued on Wednesday, UNICEF is aware of the reported attack and therefore called for immediate and unconditional release of any missing child.

He said: “According to unconfirmed reports, many students are unaccounted for, though it is not yet clear how many. UNICEF condemns in the strongest possible terms any attack on a school”.

While recognizing efforts being made by the Federal Government to trace all missing children, UNICEF stress the need for their safe return to their families.

Mr Hawkins said: “UNICEF is deeply concerned about these reported acts of violence. Attacks on schools are a violation of children’s rights. He added that children should feel safe at home and at school and that parents don’t expect to worry about the safety of their children at school.
