In a move aimed at revitalising its cultural and artistic endeavours, the University of Calabar has appointed Dr. Arnold Udoka, a distinguished faculty member from the Department of Theatre and Media Studies, as the new Director of the University of Calabar Performing Company (UCPC).

The decision, approved by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, was officially conveyed through a letter dated December 4, 2023. The University Registrar, Mr. Gabriel O. Egbe, signed the letter, outlining that Dr. Udoka’s appointment is initially for a two-year term, effective from the aforementioned date.

Dr. Arnold Udoka, renowned for his contributions to the field of theatre and media studies, is expected to bring his wealth of experience to bear in repositioning the UCPC. The university, recognising the importance of this cultural entity, aims to restore its former glory under Dr. Udoka’s leadership.

In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Udoka has a robust background in the theatrical arts and cultural expression. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to leverage his expertise in fostering artistic excellence within the university community.

The University Registrar’s letter emphasised the significance of the UCPC within the broader university structure. Dr. Udoka has been entrusted with the task of steering this cultural flagship, and relevant university departments have been urged to extend the necessary support and cooperation to ensure the success of his tenure.

Giving his exploits as Director Dance of the National Troupe of Nigeria, National Choreographer/Director, Performing Arts of the National Theatre/National Troupe of Nigeria, before returning to the ivory tower, Dr. Arnold Udoka is poised to embark on initiatives aimed at promoting the performing arts, nurturing talent, and rekindling the cultural spirit within the University of Calabar. The university community eagerly anticipates the positive transformations that Dr. Udoka’s expertise is expected to bring to the UCPC during his tenure.

He was the Choreographer for the production of the opening of the MKO Abiola stadium in Abuja, the opening and closing ceremony of the 8th All Africa Games in Abuja, opening and closing ceremonies of Nigeria Centenary celebrations, opening ceremony of the Queens visit for CHOGM, as well as directing the performances to celebrate the visit of President Bill Clinton to Nigeria, among various high-profile productions.
