Shettima made the remarks on Monday in Abuja while serving as Special Guest of Honour at the presentation of TVC anchor and author Babajide Kolade-Otitoju’s (BKO) book, My Life and Journalists Hangout. The event drew several governors and top government officials.
“The essence of government is to provide security to the lives and property of citizens. The President is very much concerned and is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that security issues are frontally addressed,” Shettima stated.
The Vice President also praised BKO’s work, describing it as a model of integrity and courage, and emphasised the media’s crucial role in strengthening democracy. “Democracy depends on a strong media culture. The media is not a theatre of noise; it is a republic of conscience,” he added.
Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State, who chaired the event, lauded BKO for his commitment to truthful reporting, while BKO, celebrating his 60th birthday, reflected on the personal and professional challenges of his career. He called on the government to adopt measures to curb insecurity, urging solutions that would allow Nigerians to live and work safely.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Governors Ahmed Ododo (Kogi), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), and Babagana Zulum (Borno). The event highlighted both the importance of security in national development and the role of a free and responsible media.
