In a triumphant return from an international championship, Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Timothy Marquis, the Director of Sport at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), expressed gratitude for the achieved victory and acknowledged the support of Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa.
Marquis credited the platform provided by the CDS for showcasing the talent among the armed forces’ sportsmen and women.
Highlighting the motivations behind the athletes’ success, Marquis outlined the dual inspiration of representing their country on the global stage and the pride associated with winning, where the national anthem and flag would take the spotlight. He emphasised the athletes’ motivation and readiness, noting that they competed among world-class opponents. Looking ahead, Marquis sees success as a building process, especially with Nigeria hosting the Africa Meeting Games next year.
Recognising the strategic importance of sports in enhancing a country’s visibility, Marquis commended the CDS for providing all necessary support for sporting engagements. He proudly announced the team’s return with gold and silver medals, showcasing Nigeria’s prowess in the sporting arena.
Marquis highlighted the positive reception and attention the Nigerian athletes received abroad, noting that even those who initially doubted their capabilities sought to associate with them. He attributed this newfound recognition to the positive image of the “new Nigerian.”

In a nod to leadership principles, Marquis emphasized the importance of leaders being close to those they lead, engaging in sporting spirit, and maintaining a playful demeanour. “I commend the CDS for his leadership in promoting sports engagement within a short period, which I am sure will lead to continued success in future engagements.”
The athletes expressed gratitude for the motivation received and promised to bring more glory to the nation.
