“We Will Not Fail Nigerians”: Gen. Musa Charts Reform Path as Nigeria’s New Defence Minister

The newly appointed Minister of Defence of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has assumed office with a passionate pledge to strengthen national security through unity, strategic coordination, improved welfare, and a renewed commitment to professionalism.

Addressing top defence officials and ministry personnel, the Minister expressed deep humility and gratitude for the opportunity to serve, noting that just weeks before his appointment, he was still in uniform. “Six weeks ago, I was in Kaki. Now I am coming as the Minister. It can only be God,” he said, thanking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the confidence reposed in him.

After 39 years of military service, Gen. Musa stated that leading the Ministry of Defence is both “a privilege and a solemn responsibility,” adding that the strong support he has received from Nigerians demonstrates the belief that meaningful transformation is achievable—not through rhetoric but through collective action.

“Only Nigerians Can Solve Nigeria’s Security Challenges”

The Minister emphasized that national security is a shared responsibility, insisting that progress begins with a unified mindset.
“It is only us who can solve the problem. When we agree within ourselves that we can deal with this, we will succeed,” he said.

Gen. Musa paid tribute to his predecessor and commended the dedication of personnel who have held the line through years of complex security challenges. Having served as Chief of Defence Staff, he noted that he approaches the role with firsthand knowledge of the dangers faced by troops and the operational gaps that must be urgently addressed.

Three Strategic Pillars for Defence Transformation

The Minister unveiled three pillars that will guide his early agenda:

1. Joint Operational Synergy

Gen. Musa announced an immediate review of all theatre commands and inter-service operations to strengthen collaboration across the Armed Forces.
“My door will be open to the CDS and Service Chiefs for frank discussions on equipment, training, welfare, and strategy,” he noted, stressing that adversaries must be overwhelmed through unified action rather than fragmented efforts.

2. Welfare and Morale as Force Multipliers

The Minister said morale directly affects battlefield effectiveness and pledged to prioritise:

  • timely provision of kits,
  • prompt payment of operational allowances,
  • improved accommodation and medical care,
  • and proper support for families of injured or fallen personnel.

“Anybody laying down their life for their country deserves the highest respect. I will be very critical about that,” he said.

3. Intelligence-Driven, Technology-Enabled Defence

General Musa reaffirmed that the Ministry would serve as “the strategic brain of national defence,” leveraging technology, data, and partnerships for improved surveillance, intelligence and operational efficiency.
“Experience alone is not enough. Intelligence must drive our decisions,” he stated, adding that collaboration with other security agencies and international partners will be expanded.

Zero Tolerance for Corruption and Rights Violations

The Minister set a firm tone on accountability, declaring that corruption, indiscipline, and indolence will not be tolerated.
“We must respect the human rights of Nigerians. If we make mistakes, we must make amends,” he said.

He encouraged robust internal debates but noted that once decisions are made, all units must operate as a single, united structure.

“Shedding of Innocent Blood Is Over”

Gen. Musa said security goes beyond military operations. Issues of justice, fairness, and governance must complement kinetic strategies.
“Our children must return to school. Our farmers must return to their farms,” he said.

A Call for Collective Effort

To the Service Chiefs, he pledged full support. To the ministry’s civil service cadre, he affirmed their crucial role as the institution’s engine room. He also acknowledged the prayers and encouragement of ordinary Nigerians, saying these expressions of trust must be repaid with results.

“The road ahead is demanding, but because we are Nigerians, we shall overcome,” he said confidently.

Commitment to Service

Closing his address, the Minister reaffirmed his loyalty to the Constitution and his resolve to deliver measurable outcomes:
“I am not here to preside. I am here to lead, to walk, and to deliver alongside you. I cannot do it alone.”

He concluded with a blessing for the nation:
“God bless you all, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
