WIKE AND THE WEAK SIDE OF WRONGDOINGS
By Bala Ibrahim
What goes around comes around is an expression that is commonly used to remind people that their actions will eventually have consequences that will deal with them in a manner similar to, or even harsher than what they have done. Call it repercussion or aftermath, but the bottom line is that, no matter how long it may take, what you did to others would happen to you, eventually. What you sow is what you will reap. It is another way of saying, your future consequences are determined by your present actions. If you do good things, you will likely receive good results, and if you do bad things, you will likely face bad reactions.
As human beings, we all have weak sides or weaknesses, but when one has the weakness of exhibiting arrogance as a permanent hallmark, knowing fully that his actions come to others with injury, and he derives pleasure in announcing his unwillingness for remorse or regret, my brother, don’t go to the books of God, even the book of man, like the novel written by Teju Cole, has an answer in the proverb, “Every day is for the thief, one day is for the owner”. The message simply says, while a criminal might get away with their actions for a while, their downfall is inevitable.
I am not saying Wike is a criminal, because I know he is a lawyer and his wife is a judge. He can decide to sue me before her, and between the two of them, they can send me to prison before trial. Abeg, I am only using the proverb of Teju Cole metaphorically, to relate the nemesis that has come on to Wike.
Yes, nemesis, which is the inescapable agent of someone’s downfall, has caught up with Wike, because his wrongdoings have come full circle. I don’t want to go into the issues of his fracas with his political Godson, H.E. Fubara, the Governor of Rivers State, the protective position he took in preventing DSS officials from ransacking the residence of a judge that was his friend, or the glorification he gave the appointment of a retired Naval chief, as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State.
But now, the circumstances have changed, such that he is acting in the reverse. Wike is now on the wrong side of wrongdoings. He was blocked in the same way and style he did while he was a Governor, ironically, by naval officers attached to a retired chief of Naval Staff. Because Wike is the recipient of the aggression now, he felt, a retired chief of Naval Staff does not deserve such prestigious protection. But when the job was to humiliate Fubara, he applauded the appointment of such a person, as Sole Administrator, and the provision of such military paraphernalia. That is how nemesis comes in support of the law of karma.
In reaping from the weak side of wrongdoings, pursuant to the public outcry, Wike is again reportedly denying calling Naval Lieutenant Yarima a fool. I saw him addressing the press and passing the blame on the members of the fourth realm of the estate for twisting his words. “I did not call the naval officer a fool,” he said. “What I said was that you can’t be carrying out an illegal order. That’s what I meant… I didn’t say military fool, I couldn’t have said that. So there is a fool and a military fool? I wish I know what my Ibo friends mean, when they say Chineke! But this is the right time to say Chineke! Does it mean that these two or three phrases, “You are a fool, and, I am not a fool, I am an officer, an officer with integrity”, that have come to enrich our lexicon in the last four days, are the creation of the Nigerian press? Chei, no problem, diaries God!
No doubt Wike has transformed the Abuja infrastructure, in a way that ridiculed the performance of his predecessors. But his tenure is also tainted by the terrible allegations of wrongdoings, including nepotism, arrogant and arbitrary land grabbing, alongside corruption in the sale or allocation of plots. It is in the discharge of such dirty dealings, that the plot of a retired chief of Naval Staff was allegedly encroached. And resulted in the visit of the weak sides of wrongdoings to Wike. That is nemesis.
When things happen, nature has a way of making them happen for a purpose. The action of officer Yarima has probably saved the plot of his three star boss. But what about others, who dont have the privilege of an officer like Yarima?. I am sure if investigation is carried out, there could be many helpless citizens that have fallen victims of such brashness. The government should see what happened as the opening of the can of worms, and seize the opportunity to effect the kind of corrections that would really renew the hope of other victims, whose status is so ordinary, with no access to the likes of Naval lieutenant Yarima.
