Women Affairs Ministry Seeks Greater Awareness for World Bank-Supported Human Capital Development Programme
The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs has called for increased awareness and wider participation in the second phase of the Federal Government and World Bank co-financed Human Capital Development Programme under the Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement (SPESSE) Project.
The appeal was made by the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, during a briefing with project field workers and stakeholders.
As one of the implementing partners, the minister emphasized the importance of developing a sustainability plan to ensure the long-term impact of the initiative. She noted that the project provides fully funded professional courses in six universities across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and is open to members of the public.
According to the ministry, the programme is designed to build a pool of certified professionals in procurement, environmental, and social standards, in line with global best practices and Nigeria’s development objectives.
The initiative seeks to strengthen capacity in key areas, including the prevention of gender-based violence, the elimination of child labour, and the promotion of responsible social and environmental practices in both public and private sector projects.
Field workers briefed the minister on ongoing implementation efforts, highlighting the programme’s role in equipping participants with internationally recognized skills and certifications that can contribute to national development and institutional strengthening.
Representatives of the World Bank and other members of the project team reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining transparency, accountability, and ethical standards throughout the implementation process.
They stressed that the project is aimed at empowering individuals, strengthening institutions, and enhancing Nigeria’s capacity to effectively implement sustainable procurement, environmental, and social standards.
The SPESSE Project is a World Bank-supported initiative designed to build human capital and institutional capacity in critical development sectors, contributing to sustainable growth and improved governance across the country.
