The Osun State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for the absolute independence and protection of all Journalists as they discharge their assigned duties.

In a statement signed by the State Chairman and Secretary of the Union, Comrade Wasiu Ajadosu and Adeyemi Aboderin respectively on the occasion of the 2024 World Press Freedom Day emphasized that the roles of Journalists and the media in information dissemination and development of the nation cannot be overemphasized.

The statement notes the various hazards Journalists go through sometimes in the discharge of their duties to cover stories as the watchdogs of society.

It calls for better welfare and working conditions for media workers and further enforcement of the Freedom of Information Act.

NUJ Osun State Council calls for more respect for practising journalists in order to enable them to discharge their duties professionally.

It explains that as the fourth Estate of the Realm, the media should also continue to hold the government accountable to the people and be cautious while discharging their duties with the current national economic, security and fuel crisis.

With this year’s theme: A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of Environmental Crisis, the statement calls for adequate security and respect for the press.
