Yusuf Buhari, son of Nigeria’s late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has offered a rare and personal reflection on how life changed after his father left office, revealing the dramatic shift in public attention that followed the end of presidential power.
In an emotional account, Yusuf recalled the overwhelming flood of calls that came in immediately after former President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat and congratulated his father on winning the 2015 presidential election.
“After Goodluck Jonathan made that call to my dad to congratulate him on his victory as Nigeria’s next President, I used to receive up to 2,000 calls a day from different people,” he said.
According to him, the calls began as early as 4 a.m., pouring in from old classmates, distant acquaintances, extended family members, and even individuals who had once worked for the Buhari family in various capacities.
“There were also callers with bogus, untraceable explanations,” he noted, adding that his assistant often had to politely end such conversations.
However, Yusuf said the intense public attention did not last beyond his father’s tenure in office.
“The moment my dad left power and handed the baton to His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the calls dropped dramatically to about 100 a day,” he disclosed.
The change became even more pronounced after the former president’s burial.
“After my dad was buried, they reduced even further to around 20 daily — usually just from siblings and business associates. The phones no longer ring. Nobody truly cares,” he said.
His remarks underscore the transient nature of influence and the reality that public attention often revolves around access to power rather than personal connection.
