Zainab Abacha Defends Legacy of Late Father, Former President Sani Abacha
Zainab Abacha, daughter of Nigeria’s late military ruler Sani Abacha, has described her father as one of the most misunderstood leaders in Nigeria’s history, emphasizing his role in safeguarding the nation’s finances.

Speaking recently, Zainab said, “My late father remains one of the most misunderstood leaders Nigeria has ever produced… yet he was a good man.”
She highlighted Abacha’s prudence in managing national resources, explaining that he helped Nigeria build reserves that could support the country during financial crises. “Whenever the country looks like it’s going broke, those reserves he kept overseas come in to save the day… just like that,” she said.
Zainab contrasted her father’s choices with those of leaders who might have indulged in personal luxury, noting, “If my dad had been more interested in luxury and appearances, he would have spent the money on yachts, private jets, and countless hotels in Dubai or Saudi Arabia. But no—he saved it for the rainy days.”
She expressed hope that future generations of Nigerians would recognize and appreciate the leadership and foresight of her father. “Someday Nigerians will truly understand who my dad was,” she concluded.
