Governor of Borno State, Engr. Babagana Umara Zulum, has assured members of the engineering profession across Nigeria that adequate measures are being put in place to guarantee the safety and comfort of delegates attending the 2026 International Engineering Conference scheduled to hold in Maiduguri.

Governor Zulum gave the assurance on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Ali Alimasuya Rabiu, at the Government House in Maiduguri.

The NSE President explained that his visit formed part of official engagements in the state, including an inspection of facilities being prepared for the conference. He noted that recent security incidents, including bomb attacks and killings within Maiduguri metropolis, had raised concerns among engineers regarding their safety ahead of the December event.

Rabiu also commiserated with the Borno State Government over the loss of lives and property resulting from the incidents.

Responding, Governor Zulum acknowledged the concerns but reassured the engineering community that security agencies in the state remain vigilant and committed to protecting lives and property.

He described the March bombing incidents as unfortunate but noted that security challenges could occur in any part of the country, citing recent kidnapping incidents reported in some southern states. He maintained that efforts were being intensified to ensure a safe environment for residents and visitors alike.

The governor further disclosed that he is personally overseeing the construction and upgrade of facilities earmarked for the conference. He expressed confidence that the projects would be completed on schedule and revealed plans to invite the NSE President back to Maiduguri before October to commission some of the infrastructure projects executed by his administration.

Zulum also announced that within the next two months, a joint working committee comprising senior Borno State officials and NSE representatives would be inaugurated to coordinate preparations for the 2026 International Engineering Conference, Exhibition and Annual General Meeting (AGM).

During the visit, the NSE President formally presented the hosting rights flag for the 2026 conference to the governor.

As part of his engagements in Maiduguri, Rabiu also visited the residence of Muhammadu Indimi to formally present a letter conveying his admission into the Honorary Fellowship cadre of the Society.

The NSE delegation also paid a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar ibn Umar Garbai el-Kanemi, to seek royal blessings and support for the conference.

Before departing Maiduguri, the delegation inspected the nearly completed International Conference Centre, the proposed venue for the event, and paid condolence visits to the families of two deceased senior engineers from the Maiduguri Branch of the NSE.

The 2026 International Engineering Conference is expected to attract engineers, industry leaders, policymakers and stakeholders from across Nigeria and beyond.
