C/River Guber: Party, kinsmen, friends of APC’s Bassey Otu rejoice over early lead
As of 11.30 am, preliminary returns from 1708 polling places showed Senator Bassey Otu, the APC’s nominee for governor, to be clear in the lead. This has sparked celebration in several areas of Cross River State.
Cross River State has 25 state constituencies, 3281 voting places, and 18 local government areas.
According to preliminary data computed in the polling places, Otu is in the lead with 41,500 votes, while his nearest challenger, PDP candidate Sandy Onor, receives far lower votes.
The INEC state headquarters in Calabar will compile the final, aggregated results at 5 p.m. on Sunday. The eventual winner would then be formally declared following this.
As the official results are still awaited, party supporters, particularly APC members and Otu’s alleged allies, the Efiks in Cross River Southern District, have begun to celebrate and express excitement.

Because of his endearing personality, Otu was thought to have a good chance of winning, earning the nickname “Our Sweet Prince” from the locals.
Before the departing governor, Ben Ayade, switched to the APC two years ago, Cross River had always been a PDP state.
PDP gubernatorial candidate Sandy Onor, however, said he has not lost hope until the final result is called. He has encouraged his supporters to be peaceful and optimistic about victory.
The APC is also leading in many of the House of Assembly elections in many polling units across the states.
