Human Trafficking: Immigration rescues eight victims in Jigawa

Eight victims of human trafficking were rescued by the Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service along the Kaya – Daurawa – Roni connection road in the state.

At a news conference in Dutse on Tuesday, Ahmad Bagari, the NIS State Comptroller, revealed the information.

He noted that out of the eight casualties, five were men and three were women from the states of Abia, Edo, Imo, and Ogun, while the driver was from Achilafiya Town in the Yankwashi LGA of Jigawa.

He said that the victims, their driver, and a car with the registration number YEN-07 CE Bayelsa were all saved on Sunday, November 20, 2022, at around 7 o’clock on their way to the Niger Republic, en route Libya.

He explained that the victims were between 19 and 45 years old, pointing out that only one of them was in possession of an expired Nigerian passport.

The Comptroller listed the victims’ names as Nosa Isaac (M) 45yrs – Edo, Emanuel Ogur (M) 37yrs – Imo, Abdulwasiu Oladokun (M) 36yrs – Ogun, Blessing John (F) 28yrs – Abia, Etiosa Henry (M) 24yrs – Edo, Osagie Francis (M) 20yrs – Edo, Faith Moses (F) 20yrs – Edo, and Success Jacob (F) 19yrs – Abia.

He further explained that the victims mostly travelled without an agent as all transactions were made on phone within the syndicate.

Comptroller Bagari added that no illegal substances or items were discovered in their possession during questioning.

He disclosed that Idris Jere, the Comptroller General of the Service, had ordered that the victims be given to NAPTIP and encouraged parents and guardians to refrain from sending their kids/wards overseas in search of a nonexistent “greener pasture.”

He emphasized that in terms of freedom and other expectations, Nigeria was way superior to the so-called greener pasture outside.
