Interior Minister Orders Probe into Allegations of Correctional Service Personnel Aiding Terrorism
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has instructed the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, to investigate allegations against personnel amid claims of collaboration with inmates in financing terrorist operations.
In a recent appearance before the House of Representatives, Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Chris Musa, accused certain correctional service personnel of conniving with inmates, allowing them to plan and fund terrorist activities from within the prison. Musa clarified that not all personnel are involved but highlighted challenges of corruption within the system.
In response to these serious allegations, Minister Tunji-Ojo, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Alao Babatunde, condemned the unpatriotic acts of the implicated personnel. He pledged a thorough investigation and emphasized that any officer found culpable of sabotaging the Nigerian Correctional Facility and national security would face legal consequences.
The statement by Babatunde asserted, “The minister has called for a speedy investigation into the matter, noting that any officer culpable or complicit of sabotaging the Nigerian Correctional Facility, and by extension the security of the country, shall face the full wrath of the law. The minister also wishes to inform the public that actions are underway to reform the correctional service to match international standards where inmates would be truly rehabilitated in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.”
Highlighting a commitment to decisive action, the statement concluded, “The era of talks but no action is over. The Renewed Hope administration will not entertain a breach from any officer. We have the interest of the state to protect, and it is above anyone’s interest.”
