Minister tasks school principals on solving problems in the education sector

 

The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba has called on principals of federal unity colleges (FUCs) in the country to proffer solutions to problems facing the education sector.

Nwajiuba, who made the call on Monday during the opening ceremony of the 2021 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of principals of the 110 federal unity colleges held at the Gombe international hotel in Gombe state, urged the principals to recommend solutions for the federal government could act on.

He said as heads of their colleges, the principals should use the meeting to discuss problems not only affecting their colleges but Nigerian education by extension.

According to him, the federal unity colleges were established by the former head of state, Yakubu Gowon to foster unity and national cohesion among Nigerians advising teachers of the FUCs to accept to work outside their states of origin to achieve the goal of the schools.

He said as part of efforts to improve the plight of Nigerian teachers, president Muhammadu Buhari approved the extension of the retirement age of teachers to 65 years, an increase of teachers’ salaries, and automatic employment of graduates of education courses among other welfare packages.

Also speaking, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, who was represented by his deputy, Manasseh Daniel Jatau lauded the principals for choosing to hold the event in the state and said his government is education friendly.

He noted that at its inception, the present administration declared a state of emergency on education, adopted the policy of training and retraining of teachers, and renovated dilapidated structures in schools in the state.

In her remarks, the chairperson of principals of federal unity colleges, Mrs. Yakubu Oyinloye explained that the Annual General Meeting is a forum that gives the principals the opportunity to interact with one another and the senior officials of the federal ministry of education.

She said the theme for this year is “The role of education in eradicating social vices” saying the participants would discuss extensively the theme as it is relevant in this era of insecurity.

In her words, “Providing strong quality education for both males and females can be a veritable tool for curbing if not eradicating these social vices and this by extension safeguarding our schools and the society will be at peace.”
