Support institutionalization of AU youth envoy’s office — Envoy tells youth ministers

By Moses A. Uyang.

The AU Ministers of Youth across the Continent will be meeting this week in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia during the 4th Session of the Special Technical Committee on Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture.

Having spent a rigorous one-and-a-half year laying the foundation of the Office of the AU Youth Envoy as well as engaging in various innovative initiatives, Ms. Chido Cleo Mpemba, the African Union Chairperson’s Youth Envoy has called on the massive support of all Youth Ministers across the Continent to give their undivided support towards the realization of a fully institutionalized Office of the AU Youth Envoy.

Ms. Mpemba will be making a few policy requests at the Special Technical Committee Meeting with the Ministers of Youth.  With her foresight for the future of the office, her desire to create a soft landing for her successors, as well as her quest for a more formalized setting where youth voices will be properly represented, the Envoy will be expecting all the Youth Ministers or their representatives to consider the following for approval and action:

  1. TO VISIT THE ARTICLES IN THE AFRICAN UNION YOUTH CHARTER FOR RE-ESTABLISHMENT
  2. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW MECHANISM ON THE MONITORING AND EVALUATION OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE AFRICAN UNION YOUTH CHARTER BY ITS MEMBER STATES
  3. INSTITUTIONALIZATION OF AN ANNUAL AU YOUTH TOWN HALL MEETING TO BE HELD ALONGSIDE THE ORDINARY SESSION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE HEADS OF STATE AND GOVERNMENT MEETING
  4. INSTITUTIONALIZATION OF THE OFFICE OF THE AFRICAN UNION YOUTH ENVOY

Knowing the many advantages of the youth population in Africa, there is no doubt the ideas above from Ms. Chido is futuristic and timely for an Africa where young people are not just spectators but actual players in the development of the Continent.
