UN women urge stakeholders to scale-up elimination of GBV

United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women has urged stakeholders to scale-up the elimination of gender-based violence amidst COVID-19 pandemic in Bauchi state.

Mrs Comfort Lamptey the UN Women Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS made the call at a workshop on strengthening state capacities and women’s participation in COVID-19 response and broader peacebuilding initiative Programme on Wednesday in Bauchi

Lamptey represented by Mrs Bukola Ademola project Coordinator lamented the sharp rise in gender based violence (GBV) during the pandemic reveals the urgent need to scale-up efforts towards addressing the scourge.

According to her, the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent rise in domestic violence resulted in increased high level Political attention to the scourge GBV.

“Bauchi state became the first state in the North East to domesticate the Violence against persons prohibition (VAPP) act.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified pre-existing gender inequalities and revealed stark gaps in the status quo on gender equality.

“The sharp rise in GBV during the pandemic reveals the urgent need to scale-up efforts towards addressing this scourge,” she said

Lamptey explained that UN Women in partnership with British High Commission designed and implemented the project, “strengthening state capacities and women’s participation in COVID-19 response and broader peacebuilding initiative.

She said the project seeks to advance the women peace and security (WPS) agenda and enhance a gender responsive COVID-19 pandemic response.

“By strengthening state level institutional frameworks to prevent and respond to gender based violence.

“Enhance women’s meaningful participation in the COVID-19 response and promote women’s role in formal peace dialogues and mediation processes,” she said.

She commended the wife of the Governor Hajiya Aisha Mohammmed and the State government and the media for their frantic efforts against the scourge of GBV in the state.

In her remarks, Hajiya Mohammmed the wife of the state govenor said they will rest until the menace of violence against women reduced to the bearest and papetrators are brought to book.

Represented by Mrs Yachit Dala said the action committee on GBV and the state are committed to fight against gender based violence in the state.
