War Against Insurgency: North-East Governors Forum laud President Buhari, security agencies

The governors of the six states in Northeastern Nigeria, under the aegis of the North-East Governors’ Forum (NEGF) have commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the security agencies for their efforts in combating insurgency in the region.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the 7th meeting of the Forum which was held in Gombe, Gombe State on Friday and signed by its Chairman, Gov Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State.

The Forum which comprises the Governors of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe States, also expressed delight at the growing strength of the cooperation, collaboration and cordial relationship between the Governors of the six States of the region.

According to the communiqué, the Forum reiterated its commitment to foster common ground and pursue a collective course for the benefit of the region.

The Forum, however,  expressed concerns over the new trend of kidnapping in the region which they described as worrisome, calling on the federal government and security agencies to essentialise the issue of kidnapping and come up with implementable measures to deal with this element of criminality before it is too late.

The Forum also expressed concern on what they described as the parlous state of power supply in the north-east region, which they said at present receives less than 5% of the national allocation of grid energy while accounting for 14% of the population and 30% of the landmass.

While noting the direct correlation between energy, security and a high level of poverty and the GDP status, the Forum called on the Federal Government to introduce innovative strategies by investing in the production of comparatively cheaper hydropower and renewable energy.

While thanking the Federal Government for establishing the University of Health Sciences in Azare to address the huge manpower deficit in the health sector and pledging to support the University to deliver on its mandate, the Forum also urged the Federal Government to accelerate the execution of the Mambila hydroelectricity project.
