House Committee on Army Commends Military for Efforts in Securing the Country
In a demonstration of their oversight duties, the House Committee on Army, led by Chairman Hon Abdullahi Mamudu, visited the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (JTF) North East Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri on April 24, 2024.
During the visit, the committee received a comprehensive briefing on the activities of JTF OPHK from Colonel MI Ibrahim. The briefing covered various aspects including an overview of OPHK, military kinetic operations, efforts in resettling Internally Displaced Persons, the surrender of terrorists, and the ongoing threat of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
Additionally, the committee was briefed on the projects undertaken by the 27 Support Engineers Regiment in Damaturu, presented by Brigadier General AO Kazeem, Commander of the 47 Engineers Brigade.
Chairman Hon Abdullahi Mamudu expressed appreciation for the military’s role in ensuring the security of the country, acknowledging that without their efforts, normal daily activities would be challenging. He emphasized the National Assembly’s responsibility to provide the necessary budgetary support for the military to effectively carry out its constitutional duties. Hon Mamudu also thanked the military personnel for their sacrifices, particularly those who have paid the ultimate price, and urged the military to prioritize the use of technology in addressing security challenges.
The Theatre Commander of OPHK, Major General Waidi Shaibu, welcomed the committee and highlighted the ongoing major operations being conducted across the theatre. He emphasized the significance of OPHK in addressing insurgency and terrorism in the Northeast region, reiterating the commitment to restoring law and order. General Shaibu outlined OPHK’s successes in neutralizing terrorists, capturing equipment, and rescuing hostages, while affirming the determination to bring an end to insurgency through revised strategies.
Highlights of the visit included a presentation of the quarter guard, a visit to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital where the committee members commiserated with wounded troops, a tour of the ongoing construction of the 7 Division Headquarters, an interactive session, presentation of mementos, signing of the visitor’s book, and group photographs.
The visit underscored the committee’s commitment to overseeing military operations and ensuring adequate support for the security forces in their efforts to protect the nation.
