The Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) on Saturday, hosted its monthly “Walk for Health” aerobics exercise at Mogadishu Barracks, Abuja, attracting families of military, police, FRSC, Customs officers, and fitness enthusiasts for a vibrant day of wellness and bonding.

Led by DEPOWA President, Mrs. Oghogho Gwabin Musa, participants embarked on a brisk walk through designated routes in Asokoro before converging for aerobics, dance sessions, and free medical checks, including blood pressure screenings.

Addressing the gathering, Mrs. Musa explained that the initiative goes beyond fitness, serving as a platform to promote mental health, reduce stress, and strengthen unity within the armed forces and police community.

“The Walk for Health is not just about physical exercise; it’s about promoting wellness in its entirety and fostering stronger bonds among our families,” she said.

She added that under her leadership, DEPOWA has prioritized health advocacy, barracks sanitation, empowerment programmes, and community service to better support officers and their households.

Participants described the monthly programme as both “refreshing and impactful,” noting improvements in their personal health and a stronger sense of camaraderie across security families.

FCT Mandate Secretary for Women Affairs, Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, lauded Mrs. Musa’s leadership and praised DEPOWA for rolling out initiatives that directly impact women, children, and youths in barracks communities.

“This is the kind of collaborative effort our nation needs—programmes that uplift families, strengthen unity, and inspire healthier lifestyles,” she remarked.

Also speaking at the event, public health expert Dr. Enobong Obot educated participants on heart disease prevention, stressing the importance of regular exercise, balanced diets, and routine medical checks.

She urged women to prioritize self-care despite busy schedules, noting that healthy mothers and wives are the backbone of resilient households.
