Researchers from University College London and University of the Republic analysed genetic data from more than 35,000 adults enrolled in the UK Biobank. Their findings revealed that individuals who are genetically predisposed to napping tend to have a larger total brain volume — a key indicator of healthier brain ageing.

Scientists explain that while brain shrinkage naturally occurs with age, accelerated shrinkage is often linked to memory decline and conditions such as dementia. The study suggests that habitual short naps may play a protective role in maintaining brain structure.

Experts believe daytime naps help the brain recover from sleep deprivation and daily stress. Additional findings published in the Sleep Healthindicate that adequate rest supports memory consolidation and overall cognitive performance.

However, specialists recommend limiting naps to between 20 and 30 minutes to prevent grogginess and disruption of nighttime sleep patterns. While daytime napping is not considered a substitute for quality night sleep, researchers say it could serve as a simple lifestyle habit to support long-term brain health.
